Spring Lichen in Minnesota

Spring Lichen in Minnesota
I’ve been studying the relationship of color in my art for the past year or so, and limiting myself to minimal forms: overlapping shapes and lines in order to focus my explorations on mostly color.
At the beginning of my painting journey, I chose to mainly use circles and wavy lines to represent different concepts I’ve been grappling with in life.
Wavy lines have represented to me, the beautiful balance of order and chaos that surrounds us, especially in nature.
So when a piece of vibrant lichen-covered bark fell from a tree and coincidentally onto my sketchbook in my lap (chaos), a beautiful display of a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae (order), I took that as a directive to reassemble this feeling this experience gave me into a piece of seemingly chaotic overlapping lines— but carefully ordered and intentionally placed.
